“We couldn’t have existed ten years ago, before Facebook, because people weren’t really into sharing,” says Nate Blecharczyk, one of Airbnb’s founders. Airbnb doesn’t require its users to connect their accounts to Facebook, but when people find they have friends in common with another user it sets their minds at ease. Thanks to social media, says David Lee, founder and managing partner of SV Angels, an early investor in Airbnb, “people are generally more comfortable meeting new people using technology.” Providing a secure platform for financial transactions is vital, he says, but creating a trusting community is just as important when it comes to attracting users.

The integrality of the world community dictates that we find a common “language and culture” that can serve as an umbrella over all our differences and on which we can all unite and work together toward the goal of restructuring and redefining ourselves as human beings and how we should act toward others and toward the environment.

“You have whole generations growing up, who have a very different attitude towards owning and sharing,” Botsman says. “They're sharing videos, they're sharing content, they're sharing ideas and they're sharing contacts all online, and now these behaviours are just extending to other parts of their lives.” So, what does Botsman think will happen next with this trend? “At the moment, people tend to engage in one segment of their life. For instance, they are really active with this idea of sharing transportation, but they've never heard of peer-to-peer finance,” she says. “One of the big changes that is coming up, is that you're going to see more and more people move across sectors and realise that all of these behaviours are connected.” |
