Second Life Destinations

The DRD Arctic Express is simply magical. The setting of this old fashion steam locomotive in a snowy polar ice region, together with the lush settings inside, including a dining car reminiscent of the famous Venice-Simplon Orient Express (which I was lucky enough to ride once on a short journey from Southampton England to Waterloo Station, London) makes for wonderful photographic opportunities

Inspired by the 1985 children’s classic, The Polar Express, written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, the DRD Arctic Express, built by sisters Jaimy Hancroft and Eowyn Swords, is currently being showcased in its own region for the holiday season. As the region is a venue for the Lab’s Jolly Holiday Crawl, and DRD is the subject of segment #42 of the Drax Files World Makers; (see my review here), Caitlyn and I took time out on a Friday afternoon to pay it a visit.

The express sits to one side of a snow-bound landscape under an overcast sky, patiently awaiting passengers to climb the steps and board the carriages. Those who do will find there’s considerable comfort to be had within. For example, the First Class saloon located immediately behind the engine and its tender, provides soft sofas and armchairs in which to relax, with decorated Christmas trees offering a seasonal sparkle, while cookies and hot chocolate are on hand to ward off the cold.

My continuing explorations around the topic also brought me to Everwinter in SL, which describes itself as a ‘Post Apocalyptic Theme Park’. As sim creator Lauren Bentham points out in a notecard you are given on arrival, “Everwinter is fictional but inspired by the abandoned amusement park in the real world city of Pripyat, it is only my vision and not an accurate representation of Pripyat.” Nonetheless, the builds there of Pripyat icons (many by Death Row Designs) are of a higher quality that the builds featured on my post yesterday, and they include the famous ferris wheel and the nearby bumper car attraction. It’s also claimed that the audio message you can hear in Russian as you enter the sim “is the actual recording of the evacuation message played to the city of Pripyat following the nuclear disaster.” If you join the Everwinter group it’ll cost you $L150, but for that you get the right to rez, which can be very handy for photographers.

C’est pas trés original mais franchement moi j’adore les voyages, et ce que je prefere c’est les ambiances dans les moyens de transports longue distance.
Ca commence des l’embarquement, la vie prend tout son sens, je me sens vivante et grisée par le fait de quitter le connu et apprivoiser l’inconnu.
