Counter-spinning turbine design draws double the energy from ocean waves

Counter-spinning turbine design draws double the energy from ocean waves | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
Scientists at Australia's RMIT investigating the massive untapped potential of wave energy have come up with a novel design for a convertor they say operates with far greater efficiency than comparable solutions, and which they hope could open the door to widespread commercial use of the…
Joel Barker's insight:

If you have been following this newsletter, you will have noticed that important improvements in every field is the NORM! This wave generator is a great example.  JB

Are hungry swarms of tiny krill behind ocean mixing?

Are hungry swarms of tiny krill behind ocean mixing? | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
Krill may be tiny, but hungry swarms of the small ocean creatures may be a contributor to ocean mixing and possibly global climate.
Joel Barker's insight:

And so the little influence the big. Ecosystem truth!  JB

Aston Martin dives deep with new Triton submarine

Aston Martin dives deep with new Triton submarine | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
After refining its nautical skills on the AM37 powerboat from last year's Monaco Yacht Show, Aston Martin is back in Monaco talking up another project that puts its design expertise to use at sea. With the Project Neptune submersible, Aston declares its intent to send vessels below the surface.
Joel Barker's insight:

We are developing small scale, highly effective submersibles to explore the vastly unknown bottom of the oceans.  JB

Rolls-Royce predicts robotic ships will be on the water by 2020

Rolls-Royce predicts robotic ships will be on the water by 2020 | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
This week at the Autonomous Ship Technology Symposium 2016 in Amsterdam, the Rolls-Royce-led Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications initiative (AAWA) presented a white paper outlining what autonomous cargo vessels might be like and what hurdles stand between them and the open sea.
Joel Barker's insight:

So soon?  It seems to me that the risk/reward ratio on this is a lot higher than a car or truck. A big robotic accident could spill millions of gallons of liquids into the ocean. And, since rogue waves are unpredictable, there is also that to deal with in some kind of "smart" way. Let's go slow on this one.  JB

Earth's wobble 'fixes' food for ocean creatures - Futurity

Earth's wobble 'fixes' food for ocean creatures - Futurity | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
The cyclic wobble of the Earth on its axis controls the production of “fixed” nitrogen, which is essential to the … Continued
Joel Barker's insight:

The importance of this discovery is that the ocean is "self-healing" and can regenerate the nitrogen its living creatures need. It also indicates that phosphorus, crucial to plant growth, also is regenerated in the same process. It is a 26,000 year cycle, too slow for us, but fast enough for the planet.  JB

EU outlines strategy to wipe out plastic waste

EU outlines strategy to wipe out plastic waste | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
Putting the brakes on our plastic waste is going to be anything but straightforward. Eliminating single-use plastics would be a huge step forward, and thats the direction taken by the European Union, which is launching a new strategy whereby only recyclable versions will be in use by 2030.
Joel Barker's insight:

Essential to be successful. Plastic is poisoning our seas. We may be undone by our own garbage.  JB

Here's how you size up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch from above

The Ocean Cleanup Project laid eyes on its target when it ventured into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with 30 research vessels one year ago, and now the team is taking its prying eyes to the skies to gain an aerial perspective on the task at hand.

Cashed up Ocean Cleanup project to forge ahead with real-world testing | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
The Ocean Cleanup Project has now edged a little close towards its goal, banking more than US$1.5 million in funding to move ahead with the first real-world test of its rubbish collection barriers.
Joel Barker's insight:

This idea has been poo-pooed by experts. I love the fact that it is going to get tested in the real world. If it works, it will have a profound impact on sea creatures and a clean set of oceans. JB
