As useful as plastics are in our everyday life, they’re difficult to recycle, with most ending up in landfill or the environment. Now, researchers in Japan have used a novel catalyst to recycle a common plastic into useful products like fuel and wax.

Driven by the huge burden they place on the environment, scientists are continually looking for new ways to manufacture plastic materials that make them easier to recycle, and MIT researchers are now claiming a significant breakthrough in this area.

Berkeley Lab scientists have designed a plastic that can be repeatedly recycled at the molecular level without loss of performance or quality.

This is a big deal! Up until now whenever plastic was recycled, it also devolved to a less useful plastic. What Berkley Labs has done is create a plastic that keeps its integrity and flexibility to morph into many kinds of plastic. All o f a sudden, all the plastic bottles disappear from the landscape because of their recycled value! JB

A Dutch construction company claims that it has come up with a more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly road-surfacing solution, involving the use of recycled plastic as an alternative to asphalt. Building roads using recycled water and soda bottles, they say, yields many environmental and economic benefits.

Good use of these bottles and it creates a steady need which siustains the market. JB
