Goodbye World: We’ve Passed the Carbon Tipping Point For Good

Goodbye World: We’ve Passed the Carbon Tipping Point For Good | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
Atmospheric carbon levels are probably stuck at 400 parts per million, scientists say.
Joel Barker's insight:

As more and more evidence arrives, we have to wonder why we are not doing dramatic things to change the pathway to a hotter world. Bad leadership in the private sector and purposeful distortion of accurate information by the doubters. I wonder what they will say to their grandchildren when they are "outed" for their behaviors.  JB

33rd Square | How Will Driverless Cars Change Car Ownership? | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
Autonomous cars will certainly have a big impact on our lives in the near future. For now, there are concerns about privacy, and liability issues in case a robotic car gets involved into an accident, and as Jordan Perch explores the very future of car ownership may change.
Joel Barker's insight:

Now is the time to talk about the long term implications. As I have noted earlier, the auto industry and all related industries will have to go through a paradigm shift to take advantage of driverless cars.  JB

Rolls-Royce predicts robotic ships will be on the water by 2020

Rolls-Royce predicts robotic ships will be on the water by 2020 | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
This week at the Autonomous Ship Technology Symposium 2016 in Amsterdam, the Rolls-Royce-led Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications initiative (AAWA) presented a white paper outlining what autonomous cargo vessels might be like and what hurdles stand between them and the open sea.
Joel Barker's insight:

So soon?  It seems to me that the risk/reward ratio on this is a lot higher than a car or truck. A big robotic accident could spill millions of gallons of liquids into the ocean. And, since rogue waves are unpredictable, there is also that to deal with in some kind of "smart" way. Let's go slow on this one.  JB

Study Shows Nanoparticles in Consumer Products Can Damage DNA

Study Shows Nanoparticles in Consumer Products Can Damage DNA | Short Look at the Long View | Scoop.it
Using high-speed screening technology to analyze DNA, a newly published study found that nanoparticles commonly added to consumer products can significantly damage DNA.

Thousands of consumer products — including cosmetics, sunscreens, and clothing — contain nanoparticles added by manufact
Joel Barker's insight:

The implications of nanotech begin to show up in the 2nd and 3rd order effects. We need to be very careful with this stuff.  JB
