How Critical Thinking and Media Literacy Efforts Are ‘Backfiring’ Today

How Critical Thinking and Media Literacy Efforts Are ‘Backfiring’ Today  | Thinking Clearly and Analytically | Scoop.it
Few would challenge the value of helping students develop critical thinking and information literacy. But if such skills are encouraged simply as a reactionary means to challenge knowledge, says danah boyd, the future may look even more chaotic and grim.

Speaking at the morning keynote on the third day of SXSW EDU, boyd, a researcher at Microsoft and the founder and president of Data & Society, offered this provocative observation: “Many of the forms of critical thinking that we’ve introduced into American education are backfiring right now.”

Touching on matters ranging from Russian propaganda efforts to Netflix, history to philosophy, boyd’s intellectually provocative talk raised plenty of deep questions around media and manipulation. But she also admitted there are few clear solutions.

Great tool for teachers to use in the classroom.

This is an excellent idea for us to check how we can implement our topics and also, how learners can be interested on due to the fact that we are taking into account all the benefits they can have (this as an example of  the WH questions) and also since they can discuss about what they like to learn and share in classes. In adition, thi is something I can implement in classes since learners will have the opportunity to improve this speaking skill trhough the discussion of this kind of topics and also, the ones their are interested on. Finally, students will be able to participate more ought to the increase of motivation they will have since our duty is to encourage them to use the second language they are learning.

This is a very complete guide related to critical thinking questions that can allow us to help our students reflecting on the content we present them. These questions are also very useful for teachers in development to keep in mind while planning classes and preparing the material they are presenting to their students as it leads them to better select and adapt the content to students' needs and interests and have them engaged.

3 Simple Strategies to Develop Students' Critical Thinking

3 Simple Strategies to Develop Students' Critical Thinking | Thinking Clearly and Analytically | Scoop.it

Teaching student to think...we know this is not as easy as it sounds. This post suggests looking at this through the lens of the visual displayed above (which comes from The Foundation for Critical Thinking) and recommends that you use three simple steps (quoted from post):

1) TELL students that you want them to work on their thinking.

2) Choose ONE element of thought, intellectual standard, or intellectual trait and teach students what it means.

3) Give students something to think about and ask them to practice improving their thinking.

Each of these ideas are discussed in the post and suggestions are provided to help you implement this in the classroom.

On Feb. 4, 2015 I posted an article "The Question Game: A Playful Way to Teach Students to Think" and a number of people have responded to it. This post provides some additional ways to teach students to think and many of them are playful also. If one of your goals in teaching is to help students gain this skill take the time to read this post.

Charles Fischer's curator insight, February 11, 2015 7:56 AM

A few great ideas for critical thinking. I particularly liked the activity called "telephone" (not the listening game). Teachers can use all the strategies they can to help their students think better!
