Yehudi Menuhin & Ravi Shankar: Tenderness

Marc Rougier's insight:

Two legends (Yehudi Menuhin, violin, 1916 - 1999, and Ravi Shankar, sitar, 1920 - 2012), met and played, in a famous "West meets East" recording. Dare dive into the timeless music and discover Tenderness.

Stradivarius violin recreated from CAT scan, 'sounds amazingly similar' | Violins | Scoop.it

This sounds like a miracle.

Stradivarius violins are 300+ years old and their secrete sauce is still a mystery. Almost a myth! Puzzling news therefore, both from a music and science perspectives.

Augustin Hadelich talks about 'Echoes of Paris' | Violins | Scoop.it
Today is the official CD release of Augustin Hadelich's new recording, Echoes of Paris, which was released digitally about a month ago.

This was a good excuse to chat with Augustin once again and see how he's doing, now that he has a new recording and a new fiddle. (This fall he returned the Gingold Strad to the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. He now is using the "Kiesewetter" Stradivari of 1723, through The Stradivari Society.)

Stephane Grappelli with George Gerschwin

Stephane Grappelli, a jazz icon - Someone to Watch Over Me (George Greshwin)
Joel Jacquard's comment December 7, 2010 5:05 AM
C'était juste une remarque Annie :-) car le Maestro Grappelli a un répertoire étonnant parfois inattendu, la liste est longue.
Marc Rougier's comment, December 7, 2010 5:13 AM

Tchaikovsky : Violin Concerto

Marc Rougier's insight:

This video is 38 minutes long: too much for a post. But Tchaikovsky's concerto deserves it :) Violinist is Sayaka Shoji. I might prefer versions which are a bit more "violent", but this one is full of emotion. And well fimed too.

(edited) Here is a take by super master Heifetz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fCuMFGVwhc. And Heifetz being Heifetz, it's 7 minutes shorter. On fire! :)

Marylene Delbourg-Delphis's comment, September 21, 2013 5:59 PM
Thanks! I still prefer Heifetz and Perlman.
Marc Rougier's comment, September 21, 2013 7:28 PM
Totally agree. I added a link to one of Heifetz performance of same. Thanks Marylene.

Strad Wars

Strad Wars | Violins | Scoop.it
Is the enormous worth of revered violins rooted in myth or merit?

I like this sentence: "Psychology plays an important role. If musicians think they are playing one of the greatest instruments in the world, they may actually play better."

Midori plays Ravel Tzigane

A difficult piece (not only to play...). I love it for its amazing richness of sounds, soul and rythms (for those who don't know it and are curious, I recommand you keep listening up to the second part of the piece, a bit easier). I've chosen this version by Japanese player Mirodi to make us travel even farther.

For the geeks ;)

If there’s one thing you can be sure of, 8-bit will never go out of style. Last week we wrote about the 8-bit Hero guitar named the NES Paul, and this week we have another instrument that for you: a playable 8-bit violin.

Western classic music on Chinese violin

Mrs Sun Huang plays "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso", by Camille Saint Saens. The instrument is the Erhu, or Chinese violin. It has only 2 strings and predates the western violin by 500 year. Interesting to hear how it performs on romantic music. And I really like how inspired Mrs Sun Huang looks.
