The author talks about the importance of matching "keywords" from the job posting to your response - which should be both through a customized resume and cover letter for the position. She even talks about an online tool that helps you do this "matching".
However, more important than keywords is the ability to address what the employer is seeking in the job advertisement. Rather than do the traditional "spray and pray" approach of having one standard resume and cover letter, customize it to include those specific requirements. If the ad says you'll be responsible for the monthly accounting closing process, talk specifically in your resume and cover letter about how you have improved the accounting closing process in your previous roles.

Job seekers must stand outThe News-PressJob seekers must stand out. Expected increases in hiring activity won't mean the job search will suddenly be easy. ... “If there are mistakes, it is an easy way to start eliminating people,” Rhoad said.
Standing out - personal branding, making a name for yourself, differentiating yourself from your peer group, tooting your own horn, showing companies the kind of value you can bring from writing a weekly blog post to updating your linkedin status 5 times a day.
There are literally hundreds of techniques to "stand-out". Most job seekers fail to take advantage of a small percentage of these tactics.

Prepare yourself for your next job interview! Learn how to handle tough interview questions like these from Career Expert, Amanda Haddaway.
The vast majority of executive candidates I come across in my executive search practice and in the work I do around executive job search coaching do a TERRIBLE job of preparing for interviews and handling questions. They think "let me background speak for itself". Why should I prepare for interview questions. And then they wonder why there is never a second interview.
Preparation is at the heart of doing well in interviews. Taking short cuts on this step is a major point of job search failure.

Top 10 Hardest Interview Questions. Job interview questions to prepare for.
I wouldn't necessarility agree that this list is the top 10 - however, the author does put together the "typical" questions that asked by most managers. Although these are stupid, canned, irrelevant, and unnecessary questions - they are still asked by the majority of hiring managers.

Good advice from the authors to not fall prey to "get success quick" schemes. Unfortunately, in a down economy one of the easiest marks to prey in are those who have been out of work for quite some time and are desperate to try something different. Don't be a victim!

Forget the Unemployment Rate: Three Numbers That Matter in Job SearchHuffington PostExcluding numbers on a resume is one of the most common and most damning job search mistakes.
Interesting take on meaningful numbers in a job search. I don't know if I agree with the first one - but the next two: meaningful quantifiable accomplishments and leveraging your connections are spot on.

It is quite the achievement to make it through the resume evaluation phase of the job search process, a phone interview and any number of in-person interviews. With only one open position to be handed out, many perfectly ...
Interesting analogy comparing job search and interviewing to Olympic competition. I agree that you don't call someone who fails at job search or interviewing a loser.
The problem is a little different. Those who continually miss the mark on getting interviews and don't get asked back or offered jobs frequently DO NOT have the skills and knowledge to compete effectively in today's job market.
The vast majority of candidates -whether it be at the entry level or executive level still rely on old, tired, tribal, and traditional methods of sending out resumes and answering ads on job boards.
This is a worthless approach to job hunting. Sometimes you get lucky and find something. The better opportunities go to those who are leveraging on-line and off-line networking. Unfortunately, most job seekers have not learned and applied how to network - thus they fall back on 1970s methods of finding a job - sending resumes and answering ads. No wonder the average time it takes to find a job has risen so fast.

Obvious mistakes aside, here are 10 often overlooked errors that should make the top of every job seeker’s priority list.
Another cut on the top 10 mistakes in conducting a job search. Once again, I find that most authors publishing lists of the top 10 this and the top 10 that is more personal opinion than any form of quantifiable research and study.
Our book on conducting a job search and the research behind it for example was based on interviews with over 100,000 candidates, over 1000 executive searches, and workshops with over 25,000 CEOs and Executives on hiring top talent. As you can imagine, all of our content is based on that depth of research, surveys, polling, and information collected over the last 25 years.
I chuckle at a lot of the articles I read on-line that are personal opinion, yet are written to come off as authoritative recommendations based on deep research. Some of the these top 10 mistakes are on the money and compare favorably with those that we've identifed and others miss the mark.

CVs now a mystery to the over-40sMoneycontrol.comMr Moreau says the inability to write a CV that will attract potential employers is not limited to any particular sector: many job seekers from all areas of business aged over 40 have CVs not fit for...
I liked the comment:
"Mr Chappell adds that a CV and standard covering letter no longer work and the "spray and pray" method is no longer effective either. "You need to approach each application uniquely and individually," he advises.
I'm finding the vast majority of job search candidates - even at an executive level are in the "spray and pray" mode. Not being focused, specific, targeted in your response to job ads is a sure way for your resume to end up in the trash can. It's one of the key mistakes job seekers make. It's one of the core elements we talk about in our job search methodology titled "The Career Success Methodology".

Your focus should be on solving problems for the company, on proving why you're the best candidate for the job, and on finding a culture and community that you naturally fit in with. If you do ... the job.
Good advice for job seekers. I still find many job seekers - expecially at the executive level - do not focus on the value they can bring to companies - there more focused inwardly on what their skills are = not the specific application of those skills, education, knowledge, and capabilities that can help the specific company with whom you are interviewing.

Work history gaps can be de-emphasized by volunteering, freelancing, and using a functional resume format.
The problem is that everyone thinks when you show a function resume that you have something to hide. I do agree strongly that you've got to fill in that gap with consulting, freelancing, volunteering. Being a coach potato during employment raises concerns among hiring managers.

Technically, there are hundreds of ways to sabotage (literally) a job search campaign, but for the purpose of this discussion, I will restrict myself to three common mistakes most job seekers make that keep them unemployed.
A few good examples of mistakes in conducting a job search. I'm not a huge fan of over-worked resumes since resumes don't get job interviews. However, the issues of conducting a passive job search and not measuring yourself on key indicators are spot on.

Undertaking a modern job searchBoston GlobeNot only have the letter and resume gone the technological route, the entire process of the job search has.
The root of the problem is that most companies rely on old, out-dated, traditional, and tribal approaches to receiving cover letters and resumes. It's a worthless exercise in futility for most companies in their search process. Layered on top of that is that most job search candidates still buy into this method of job search even though it's proven to be ineffective - sending resumes and answering ads.
How do we break this cycle of ineffective job search and companies trying to find talent so that the right candidates get matched with the right opportunities without all the drama and inefficiencies inherent in the process of finding a job.
