Great tips from CareerBuilder.com on references in your job search. Here is one of the tips I found most useful:
No matter how confident you are about someone's appreciation for your work, never list a reference without permission. Even if the reference isn't miffed by your presumption, she's unlikely to deliver a convincing endorsement during a surprise phone call.
I've called 1,000s of references over the last 25 years through my executive search practice, and I am always surprised when the reference is surprised that the candidate used them. Not only have they not spoken with the candidate in quite some time, but the reference could best be described as "luke-warm". Unlikely this candidate will be receiving an offer!
